Dethatcher FAQS

Why is my dethatcher removing grass?

Some grass damage is normal and expected. When you operate the dethatcher it will pull up some grass with the thatch. Removing the thatch allows existing grass to grow more densely and neatly and will allow new seeds to flourish more easily. Bare patches should be reseeded with spot-repair grass seed.

Why does my dethatcher unit make a whistling noise?

A whistling noise from your unit indicates a potential issue with the belt. Please contact support at 1-888-909-6757.

Why is my unit hard to push?

If the unit is hard to push, there may be an object obstructing the tines. Unplug, and check for debris that may be interfering with movement and remove accordingly. Let the unit rest for 1 minute after removal then start it up again. Another reason may be that the grass is too tall. You'll need to mow your grass prior to dethatching. Keep the grass short and approximately no longer than 2 inches or the shortest cutting height for the season.

Why isn’t my dethatcher dethatching well?

Here are some common issues related to unsatisfactory results from your dethatcher: • The tines are worn and need replacement. • There may be an issue with the belt. • Your grass was too tall prior to dethatching. Your lawn should be mowed right before dethatching for best results.

What is the general maintenance of this unit?

Before and after use: • Examine the unit for damaged, missing, or loose parts (tines, screws, nuts, and knobs). • Make sure all the fasteners and knobs are tightened correctly prior to use. • After use, wipe the unit down with a dry cloth. Clear the unit of any excess debris. • DO NOT use water to spray the unit down. Water can potentially get into the motor and electrical components.

What do dethatchers do?

Dethatchers are designed to remove thatch that builds up around the base of the grass and is common in lawns grown in overly acidic soil. Removing thatch build up will allow the lawn to better absorb nutrients and water and will help your lawn grow stronger.

Is this unit self-propelled?

No. The unit will pull slightly forward as it's raking up thatch, but it's not self-propelled—it still needs to be pushed and directed. However, our dethatcher units are lightweight and incredibly easy to maneuver.

When should I use my dethatcher?

The best time to detatch your lawn is late spring, early summer, and early fall. Dethatch during cooler weather and when the soil is moist but not too wet.

Does this dethatcher have a collection bag?

No, our dethatchers do not come with a bag. A collection bag wouldn't be effective because the thatch is too light to be directed into a bag.

Can this be used to aerate soil?

No, aerating removes plugs of soil from the turf. Dethatching removes the layer of thatch from below the surface of the grass, allowing water and nutrients to enter the soil more easily. The benefits of dethatching are greater and less harsh on your lawn.

Can I get longer replacement tines?

No, we currently only offer one size at 1 3/4 inches.

Can I use it to cut weeds?

No, this is strictly a dethatcher — it will not cut weeds. Dethatching removes the thatch (buildup of organic debris on the surface of the ground) which prevents water and nutrients from getting into the soil. Removing it allows for much stronger lawn growth. For cutting weeds, we would recommend our string trimmer units!

How short does my grass have to be prior to use?

We advise that your grass be mowed to its shortest recommended seasonal height prior to using the dethatcher.

Is it normal for grass to be pulled up when dethatching?

Yes, it's totally normal for some grass to be pulled up during the detaching process. We recommend that you have some lawn spot repair seeds on hand so they can help the grass grow back in in the small bare/spare spots left behind and prevent weeds from taking advantage.

Can I use it in reserve/backwards?

No, never operate this unit in reserve. It will damage/break the tines and can possibly pull up more than thatch, causing damage your lawn.
