Tiller FAQS

Would this tiller cut through small mesh-like roots under a tree? I’ve been told light weight tillers like this only bounce along on rough ground.

Though it should be able to tear up small roots, this unit is not designed for tree roots. We advise that you avoid roots and rocks when using this tiller.

How deep it will dig into topsoil?

Depending on soil conditions, this tiller will go down to a depth of 5 inches. Make sure to remove rocks and roots before cultivating to prevent damage to the tiller.

Do the Tines rotate backward?

No, the tines do not rotate backwards.

Can I use my Tiller to remove weeds?

Though you certainly can, removing weeds with a tiller is generally not recommended. While it makes the job a lot faster, it can also spread the seeds underground, ensuring the quick return of weeds into your garden.

What is the best/ideal season to use my tiller?

Autumn and spring are the most favorable seasons to use your tiller. Avoid using it if the land is too soggy as this could result in compact clods when the soil dries. For best results, wait a day or two after it rains until the soil is semi-dry.

Can the Tiller break up small twigs and branches?

It should be able to handle small twigs under 1 inch in diameter, but it's designed to cultivate soil for small gardening projects like flower beds.

Can it cut through tree root?

No, it will not cut through tree root. Tree roots should be avoided when operating this unit as it will cause damage.

Can I use my Tiller as an Edger? Can I remove the Tines and use as an Edger?

Though you certainly could, we don't recommend it. Even when reducing the number of tines, using a tiller as an edger isn't ideal because the tines are designed specifically to dig into soil rather than to cut blades of grass. You can remove the tines to till smaller areas but it wouldn't make it suitable for edging.

Can it be left out in the rain?

No, this is an electric tool that can't be left out in the rain. It is advised to store this unit in an upright position in a clean, dry place.

Are the tines bent?

Yes, the tines are bent to help further cultivate the soil while in use.

How do you lubricate the gear box and what type of lubricant do you use?

The gearbox is full of synthetic transmission grease and should never really need to be replaced. However, if you wish to change out the grease, you'll need to remove the gearbox from the unit (4 bolts at the connection point). This will leave the transmission exposed and then lubricant can be added by hand.

Why does my motor fail to start when switch trigger is depressed?

Press in and hold the switch safety lock out button and then pull back on the bale. If the unit still won't start, please refer to the following: Battery operated: Usually this means that the battery hasn’t been fully inserted. On both the charger and the unit, you'll know the battery is properly secured when you hear an audible click—sometimes it requires a good push. If the battery is loose or can easily be removed it does not have a complete and secure connection. Corded: Make sure you're using the correct sized extension cord by following the guide inside the owner’s manual. Check that the extension cord is not loose when inserted into the mower’s plug and ensure a secure connection to a live 120V AC, 60 HZ AC receptacle. *Always refer to your owner’s manual for proper starting instructions.*

Can the tiller be used without the wheels attached?

Yes, the tiller can be used without the wheels to achieve a greater tilling depth. However, it will make the unit much harder to maneuver.

Can I use my tiller on hard soil or clay?

We wouldn't recommend using this unit on hard soil or clay. This tiller is designed for cultivating soft soil in your flower bed and other light to medium jobs.

Is the tilling depth adjustable?

Yes! You can adjust the depth of the tiller by changing the level of the wheel shaft or by removing the wheels all together.

How to install tines?

*Make sure the battery has been removed from the unit before beginning installation.* 1. Lean the unit back on its wheels so that the handlebar rests on the ground. 2. Place tine C on the tine shaft to the left of the gear box. The stamped side of the tine should face away from the gear box. 3. Place tine B on the tine shaft to the right of the gearbox. The stamped side of the tine should face away from the gear box. 4. Place a felt washer on each side of the tine shaft and slide to rest against the inner tines. 5. Place outer tine D on the left side of the tine shaft. The stamped side should face in toward tine C. 6. Place outer tine A on the right side of the tine shaft. The stamped side should face in toward tine B. NOTE: When installed correctly, the angled edge of the tine blades should face the ground. To secure the tines to the tine shaft, insert the hitch pin into the holes located on either side of the tine shaft. NOTE: The unit will not operate properly if the tines are installed incorrectly. If you notice a problem with the cultivating operation of the unit, check for proper tine positioning. NOTE: Installation is from the front of the cultivator.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Would rate them 10 stars if I could Purchased a cultivater almost a year ago. Used it to till my garden last year and started again this year. The motor stopped and I saw a little white smoke coming from the top of the unit through the vents. Great not even a year old and it's trash. Called Greenworks explained the problem and they are sending a replacement unit. Didn't expect it to be that easy. Great customer service. I will recommend Greenworks to everyone I know. Thank you

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Electric cultivator is light weight and powerful!! Received the de-thatcher just other day and put it all together which was a piece of cake. Seems solidly built considering all the plastic. I have the cultivator too and thought that was kind of sketchy being there was so much plastic, but I have to say...its a beast!! I've used it for several years and love it. I'm guessing I'm going to like the dethatcher just as much, but I'll write another review this spring after I try it out. I have a large back and front yard on Long Island here in NY, so its going to be put to the test for sure. The cultivator is incredibly powerful for such a small machine, but small has big advantages I never really even considered when I purchased it, like getting between already established rows. It's easy to manipulate like some large models probably aren't as much. The cord getting in the way is the only PITA, but I knew that it would be before I bought it, but I've gotten good at working my way around it. The advantage of it being electric vs battery operated which I've tried with other brands in the past is, electric is much more powerful IMO. I definitely recommend it w/o hesitation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Third year using, no issues, gets the job done. We have a small - med garden and this cultivator has been awesome. i've run into small rocks and the wooded sides of the garden more times than i'd like to admit and it keeps chugging. For the price, this was a perfect buy for our family, has saved us a lot of time and sweat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SO impressed! I rented a LARGE gasoline powered tiller and used it on my garden and needed a larger area tilled than I prepared. For the cost of the 3 hour rental, I purchased this tiller. I regret renting the large tiller to begin with. This tiller did a FAR better job than the large tiller which kept getting clogged. This tool has been a life saver, it is light weight, powerful and really sighs deep into my compact ground. I would not use anything else ever again! 10 out of 5 stars! Thank you GreenWorks for an amazing product that I could afford!

Bought this last year in May used it once and it worked great. Brought it out this year and it worked for about 6 inches worth and then it stopped and will no longer work. Tried checking my fuses, changed extension cords, and used different outlet.
