What do dethatchers do?

Dethatchers are designed to remove thatch that builds up around the base of the grass that is common in lawns grown in overly acidic soil. Removing thatch build up will allow the lawn to better absorb nutrients and water and provide you with a stronger lawn growth.

Is this unit self-propelled?

The unit will pull slightly forward as it's raking up thatch, but it is not self-propelled. It will still need to be pushed and directed. However, our dethatcher units are lightweight and incredibly easy to maneuver.

When should I use my dethatcher?

The best time to dethatch your lawn is late spring, early summer and early fall. Dethatch during cooler weather and when the soil is moist but not too wet.

Does this dethatcher have a collection bag?

No, our dethatchers do not come with a bag. A bag would not be effective as the thatch is too light to be directed into a bag.

Can this be used to aerate soil?

No, aerating removes plugs of soil from the turf. Dethatching removes the layer of thatch from below the surface of the grass, allowing water and nutrients to enter the soil more easily. The benefits are greater and less harsh on lawn.

Can I get longer replacement tines?

No, we currently only offer one size at 1 3/4 inches.

Can I use it to cut weeds?

No, this is strictly a dethatcher. It will not cut weeds. Dethatching removes the thatch, buildup of organic debris on the surface of the ground, which prevents water and nutrients from getting into the soil, removing it allows this to happen more easily, so you get a stronger lawn growth. For cutting weed management we would recommend our string trimmer units.

How short does my grass have to be prior to use?

We advise that your grass be mowed to its shortest recommended seasonal height prior to using the dethatcher.

Is it normal for grass to be pulled up when dethatching?

Yes, it is normal for some grass to be pulled up during the detaching process. We recommend that you have some lawn spot repair seeds on hand for this reason. It will help the grass grow back in in the small bare/spare spots left behind and prevent weeds from taking advantage.

Can I use it in reverse/ backwards?

No, never operate this unit in reverse. It will damage/break the tines and could possibly pull up more than thatch if used in reverse, which may also damage your lawn.

Why is my dethatcher making a strange noise?

Debris or foreign objects maybe hitting/blocking the tine cylinder. Unplug unit, remove debris.
