String Trimmer FAQS

Why doesn’t my string trimmer turn on?

Battery operated string trimmer: Check that the battery has enough charge. Make sure to use a fully charged battery when starting your chores. Also, ensure the battery pack is installed and secured in the unit. If the battery is loose or can easily be removed it is not fully secured. A fully secured battery should have some resistance when pulled. Corded string trimmers: Use the guide inside the owner’s manual to ensure you have the correct extension cord required for operation. Check that the extension cords are in good working condition and make sure they are fully connected on both ends. If it still won't turn on, follow the start guide instructions that are located inside the owner’s manual.

How do I advance line?

Auto-feed string trimmers: To advance line, simply squeeze and release the trigger and repeat. Each time you start and stop the unit approximately ¼ inch of trimmer line will release. The more often you do this, the more line will advance. Bump and Feed string trimmers: While the unit is spinning, gently tap the bottom of the unit (knob) on the ground and the string trimmer will release approximately ¼ inch of line each time you tap it. The more often you do this, the more line will be released.

How do I clean my string trimmer?

To reduce yard debris build up on your string trimmer, do the following: • Wipe the machine after each use with a damp cloth dipped in water or neutral detergent. • Do not use aggressive detergents or solvents to clean the plastic parts or handles. • Keep the trimmer head free of grass, leaves, or excessive grease. • Keep the air vents clean and free of debris to avoid overheating and damage to the motor or battery. • Do not spray water onto the motor and electrical components.

Why does my unit stop when cutting grass?

Check the following if your unit suddenly stops cutting during use: • The guard is not on the unit. Ensure the guard is attached for each use. • The line is too heavy. Make sure you’re using the correct cutting line for your unit. Refer to the specification for the correct diameter of line that should be used with your string trimmer unit. • The motor is overloaded. Make sure that the cutting path (length of line outside of the trimmer head) is no more than the maximum cutting width of your unit. • The battery may be too warm. Allow it to cool and try again. Remove the battery from the unit and take it indoors to a cool/dry shaded location. Leave for 10 minutes, then try again once the the battery cools. • The battery pack may require charging or may not be properly installed.

Why isn’t my string trimmer cutting well?

Check that the guard is cleared of debris. Built up debris on the underside of the guard may prevent the line from cutting at its full potential. Ensure the cutting blade located on the underside of the guard is exposed, clean, and clear of debris. If the blade is dull, sharpen or replace the cutting blade. This will allow your trimmer line to work more effectively.

Leaf Blower FAQS

Do you make Gas Blowers?

No. All Greenworks leaf blowers are cordless battery-powered blowers or corded electric blowers.

Is a battery powered leaf blower quieter than gas?

Yes! Electric and battery-powered leaf blowers are generally quieter than gas models.

What is more important MPH or CFM?

Both CFM and MPH have their benefits—it depends on which type of blower you’re looking for. MPH is an abbreviation of miles per hour. This denotes the speed at which the air exits the blower. Higher MPH figures produce large pressure changes at the blower inlet. Therefore, a higher MPH is beneficial when looking at blower/vac units as higher airspeed helps move heavier debris. CFM is an abbreviation of cubic feet per minute. This denotes the volume of air displaced by the blower. High CFM units tend to move large air volumes at relatively low speeds, allowing large areas to be swept and cleared in a shorter amount of time. Axial blowers/dedicated blowers benefit more from a higher CFM and is more desirable for these units.

What is the most appropriate blower for my property?

Generally, electric leaf blowers have a CFM falling somewhere from just under 200 to 400. If your property is one acre or more, you'll probably want a leaf blower with a CFM between 400 to 700.

Can I dry my car or blow snow off my driveway?

We do not recommend using this blower for any task other than leaf blowing.

What is the difference between a hand blower and backpack blower?

Hand-held blowers are held in your hands, backpack blowers are carried on your back. Hand-held blowers are often the less expensive than backpack blowers and have smaller motors to ensure they're not too heavy to carry. But, because the motor is smaller, they have less power. These blowers are great if you have a small yard, but they can be taxing if you’re spending 30-40 minutes on the job. Backpack blowers provide more power than handheld tools. They have the added benefit of being more ergonomic because you're aided by your trunk in maneuvering the blower, so you’re not relying solely on arm strength. Backpack blowers are better for tackling large jobs, but they’re also more expensive than hand-held blowers.

How do I use the mulch function with my blower/vacuum?

When mulching leaves, the Blower/Vac must be in TURBO-MULCH mode. Items such as small leaves and twigs will be mulched as they pass through the fan housing. We recommend emptying the bag after each use to avoid deterioration and the obstruction of air flow which will reduce the performance of the mulcher.

Why is dust coming out of my collection bag while using my Blower?

This is normal. There are tiny holes in the collection bag that are necessary for its operation. They allow very small particles of dust to pass through.

What debris will the Blower/Vacuum collect?

The Blower/Vacuum is designed to collect lightweight, low density leaves. Other forms of garden debris can be collected but solid objects such as toys, twigs, stones, pinecones, etc. should be avoided.

Why is my vacuum not collecting garden debris?

If your blower is not easily picking up leaves, ensure that the nozzle is close enough to the leaves/debris. Also, make sure that the mode indicator is on the correct setting. Press the low/high switch to increase the speed options. The unique design of the blower-vac means that only lightweight, low density objects such as leaves and garden debris will be collected. It’s worth noting, higher density objects such as stones and sticks will not be collected. If you're finding that the unit is still not picking up garden debris, it may be necessary to remove the blower tube or mulcher tubes to clear a blocked tube or impeller. Please be sure to remove the battery or unplug the unit before checking the tube or impeller.

What blower can I use for hard surfaces?

The best blow power for removing heavy or wet organic materials from soft surfaces like grass, dirt, or sand will come from a corded electric blower or from our 80V PRO blowers. The 80V 580 CFM Brushless Backpack Blower offers 580 CFM, while the 80V 500 CFM Cordless Brushless Axial Blower offers up to 500 CFM—both pack plenty of power for hard surfaces.

What is the battery life and how do I maximize it?

To get the most life out of your battery, you should remove it from the charger once it has finished charging. The problem with overcharging is the potential damage it can cause to the battery that can shorten its lifespan. Of course, be sure to read your tool’s instructions as it may indicate that storing your battery on the charger is fine.

How do I get the string to advance?

Asked by: IcePonyGirl
Hello IcePonyGirl, This unit should automatically feed out 1/4 inch of spool line every time the unit is stopped and then turned back on. Avoid letting the line get too short as this often causes the auto-feed to malfunction, so be sure to stop and start the trimmer often while in use. Here are a few other tips on what to check when this happens: ensure there are no tangles in the line - if there are tangles try unwinding and rewinding the spool, ensure that you have enough line on the spool but that there is not too much line preventing the unit from feeding properly and finally ensure that the trimmer line has not become stuck or "welded" together. The cord should only be breaking at the tip where the cut-off blade on the guard is. If issues persist, please give us a call at 1-888-909-6757 (1-888-90WORKS).

When not using my 40v battery for my trimmer/blower combo, is it best to leave the battery on the charger charging even if it gets to fully charged until my text use?

Asked by: New customer
Hello, Thank you for choosing Greenworks. We advise against leaving the battery on the charger. The overall battery life is dependent on many factors such as where they have been stored, charged, and handled. When the battery will not be in use, we suggest storing it indoors, in a cool dry area - away from direct sunlight. Leave the charger unplugged and the battery disconnected from the charger unless it needs charging. We hope this helps!

can I use it with 60V 2,5Ah battery?

Asked by: adas
Hello adas, Our 40V battery cannot be used with our 40V units and vice versa. Greenworks manufactures a range of voltage platforms from 24V to 80V, each voltage platform has its own set of interchangeable tools and battery but are not interchangeable across different voltage platforms. Only Greenworks batteries, chargers, and machines of the same voltage are compatible and interchangeable with one another.

How long does a 2ah battery actually last? Also is the string to the timer single or double?

Asked by: CrystalR
Hello CrystalR, Thank you for your interest. The string trimmer features a dual-line auto-feed head. The run time varies depending on the tool that it is being used in but also the load acting against the unit while in use. In the string trimmer, this battery typically lasts 30 minutes, and in the blower at high speed, approximately 15.
